About The Artist…
Woodcarvings by Phillip E. Brown continue to amaze and delight collectors young and old from around the world. Phillip has the ability to carve figures, animals, and whatever else he sets his mind to, making him, a true Woodcarver. His feathered friends captured his heart, and his love for carving them is where most of his energy lies. A native North Carolinian, Phillip is a self-taught craftsman, carving professionally for over thirty years.
Phillip began his professional career carving in the early 1970’s spanning over three and one half decades. During this evolution, he developed a unique style which he calls “Appalachian”, a cross between stylized and realistic carving.
The uncanny instinct he has for combining these two techniques has made his creations of songbirds and birds of prey recognizable worldwide.
Using knives and chisels, Phillip forms basswood into songbirds and birds of prey. Acrylics or oil paints are then hand brushed with a multi-layered technique, producing a desired featherlike soft appearance. With a few exceptions, Phillip's birds are carved as close to lifesize as his particular style allows. Phillip’s creations are then mounted on locally found driftwood he gathers giving each piece, continued individualism. |
